Experience

While my résumé details some of my endeavors in and outside the classroom in the last few years, I've had valuable experiences and responsibilities that don't include writing. These skills don't fit on a résumé but are relevant to who I am and what I can provide.

Technology

Because of the many jobs, interests, and classes I’ve had, I’ve learned a variety of computer programs I had no prior experience with. I’ve primarily taught myself how to use publishing application InDesign, website builders WordPress and Wix, statistics programs SPSS and SAS, graphic design websites Piktochart and Canva, digital audio workstation GarageBand, and multiple point-of-sale systems for restaurant jobs. I’m proficient in these programs and continue to use many of them to this day. Whatever computer skills are necessary for a job, I’m able to learn them quickly through experience and tinkering on my own time.

Service

As soon as I got my learner’s permit when I was 15, I began working at McDonald’s. The job was not ideal, and at one point involved me cleaning feces off the bathroom wall, but I learned a lot about the value of hard work. I’ve worked at three different restaurants since then and take great pride in what I do, even if it’s just food service. In my last job, I was trained for every front-of-house position and regularly cycled between busboy, barback, food runner, and valet. My job over summer breaks has been working events for a country club where I sometimes work over 40 hours in a week. These weeks generally consist of working a wedding Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, shifts that I begin in the afternoon and don't finish until after midnight. In my job during high school, I was responsible for training new hosts and creating the monthly schedule. My flexibility, dependability, and willingness to learn has made me a go-to employee in all the jobs I've held.

Music

I've been a musician for almost my whole life. I began taking piano lessons in first grade, and by the end of high school, I’d learned to play guitar and trombone as well. When I got to college, I learned bass and drums while attending DIY shows that took place in basements. I now play in multiple bands, live in a DIY show house, and book concerts — things that have taught me valuable organizational and interpersonal skills. Being in a band requires extensive planning with bandmates and preparation to perform, while living in the house means it’s my responsibility to get to know show-goers and make sure everyone is comfortable. Running a show requires coordinating the bands, managing social media to get the word out, and careful attention during the event to make sure everything goes as planned. Though these experiences don’t require writing, they have taught me skills that are applicable in any workplace.
